Focus on Liver Health

Bitter is one of the five basic tastes, along with sweet, sour, salty, and umami. Yet over the decades, these incredibly important bitter compounds have been bred out of our foods in favor of sweetness. And yet it is these compounds that really kickstart our digestion and liver metabolism.

Bitter flavors reduce the craving for sweet foods. They convey the feeling: “I’m full.” And they get digestion going.

Bitter compounds are important for the liver. Herbs containing bitter compounds are historically among the oldest and best-known medicinal plants that can contribute to good health. Due to the diversity and widespread occurrence of bitter compounds, numerous plants possess a bitter character.
